The Road to 162-0

Three games into the season and it’s impossible to ignore the elephant in the room any longer: the Detroit Tigers are a mere 4,293 outs away from a Perfect Season. There are people who believe it is bad luck to talk about a Perfect Season while it’s still going on but I am here to tell you that the Tigers are baseball’s first luck-proof team. Nothing can derail them from winning 162 games this year. Not injuries, not slumping bats or a shaky bullpen and certainly not another team. Not sir, the Tigers are a lock to finish the season with a pristine 1.000 win percentage.

TIME TO CELEBRATE DETROIT'S GREATNESS!!!
TIME TO CELEBRATE DETROIT’S GREATNESS!!!

How the Tigers got to this point is a mystery to some. Their offseason could only be described as disatertrophic, if you’re looking at it using traditional standards. Things like the resigning Max Scherzer or filling holes through free agency or just generally improving the roster would be how most team define success, but that would be too narrow of an approach here. While losing Scherzer to the Nats for a contract that frankly probably could have been done in Detroit was less than ideal, it did free up some money to go after some other guys that would help round out what for the past few seasons had been a one dimensional roster full of power arms and power bats and a whole lot of other guys that probably didn’t belong at the big league level. There were also too many guys that were then and still are to this day slower than gridlock on the bases. The defense was also terrible up the middle, so much so that Don Kelly played regularly. So overall not a good look if your power hitters aren’t hitting and your power arms aren’t striking out the side. None of which was happening for the Tigers when it mattered most.

So how did a team with so many flaws in September become the greatest team ever assembled in April? Well part is easy to explain. The 2015 Detroit Tigers are the rarest combination of hitting and pitching that MLB has ever seen. The pitching staff has an ERA of 0.00 through 27 innings, setting the all-time AL scoreless inning streak in the process. Their only blemish has been one paltry unearned run in that time. The bullpen has been lights out. The lineup has been deadly as well, with 6 different players currently having an OPS of 1.000 or more. This team is a machine. If there is any discernable flaw with this machine however, it is that it is powered entirely by playing the Twins, who could be the worst team in all of sports.

Yet the Road to 162-0 remains clear for the Motor City Kitties, nothing but blue skies and smooth sailing from here on out. As such I’ll be here to document this historic team’s historic rise to historic history every step of the way. I think we’ll all enjoy cheering on this unstoppable juggernaut, I know I will. Not even the Curse of Kate Upton could screw this up!

Right?
